(Bob) Sandi and I went to Aransas Pass this morning to participate in the Coastal Bend Woodcarvers first show. I was really surprised and impressed with the quality of the work and the size of the show.
There are "winter Texans" here in south Texas from Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado and other states, in addition to those like us who are real Texans. I think there are about forty exhibitors, some with several table displays, plus woodcarving tool, book, and wood vendors. The club did a phenomenal job of advertising the show. They used community newspapers, circulated flyers in the scores of RV parks throughout the area, radio, website postings and every imagineable way to get the word out for several weeks. It paid off with a constant flow of people - a huge crowd throughout the day.
Carvers compete in three levels - beginners, intermediate, and open (long time, experienced, and award winning woodcarvers and professionals). I compete at the latter level. The competition has thirty-nine different categories and I entered in twenty of these. The Show Judge completed about two-thirds of the categories today and will finish judging pieces tomorrow. I was pleased to recieve several ribbons today, but am still hoping to see a blue ribbon in tomorrow's competition. I'm posting just a few photos of the crowd, the competition tables, Sandi and me at our exhibitor table, and a few of my woodcarvings that did place today. All of these were in different stylized categories - aquatic creatures(snail), animals(fox), and human(pregnant momma).
