The only cathedral left after the burning of Visby churches was St. Maria Kyrka, built between 1190 and 1225. The cathedral was impressive both outside and in with its gilted altars and magnificent icons.
Some of the original sandstone carving adornment above the entrance. There were also astonishingly ugly angel carvings around the building and on the pulpit.
As I walked outside the Visby wall, this was my view of our cruise ship, anchored offshore of Gotland Island. Note how calm the sea. It was like this for much of our cruise. I spent about an hour and a half walking the old city, seeing homes dating to the 15th and 16th century. I could see why this city is know as "The Pearl of the Baltic Sea."
