Kiel Canal Transit, Sunday June 27, 2010

Wonderful leisurely Sunday as we traveled the Kiel Canal between the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. The Canal was built between 1887 & 1895 to move the German fleet. It was internationalized in 1919 because of its commercial & militrary importance but was taken over by Hitler during the war years. Today over 60,00 ships pass through every year, as well as around 25,000 private yachts during the summer. This is typical scenery in the photo--very rural and peaceful.
This is one of the ferry sites we passed as we traveled through. We saw lots of cars loaded on to these ferries and they seemed to go across at pretty regular intervals. Everyone waved to us as we went past.

This is one of the wedges of mute swans we saw along the way. That was one of the things we learned--a group of Swans is called a "wedge". We saw them frequently and even saw one black one in a wedge. Lots of ducks, too.

This is a view from the walking track on deck 10 where people clustered to get good views and to hear the birds singing. After so many days in cities it was great to be out where we could hear the birds! You will need to click on the photo in order to see the camping trailers/RVs along the shore. They sat just off the water in bare little sites which seemed like strange camping sites to us but guess their prime reason to camp there was to watch the traffic on the canal.
