During WWII the Nazi's stole much of the art of Europe and buried much of it. This shows a painting buried in a salt mine.
The men who successfully returned much of the stolen art work were in the military but their backgrounds were in civilian life related to the arts, museums, etc. This is a photo of some of them with treasures they had found and were returning to where they belonged.
This sculpture by Michelangelo "The Madonna Bruges" was one of the most famous sculptures recovered from the salt mine. It weighed 15 ton & had been carried off by the Nazi's wrapped in a mattress. We saw this presentation by Harry on Friday the 25th and on Tuesday the 29th we saw the sculpture in real life in Bruges where it had been restored! And we had never heard this story until this lecture!!
