Highlights of Helsinki, Finland 6/18/10

Helsinki is the chief seaport of Finland and the country's capital. We got up at 6:30 and it was only 50 degrees! We were in the 1st group to the bus for our "Highlights of Helsinki" tour. We didn't think that Helsinki was as beautiful as Stockholm, I think mostly because it is a newer city. One of the squares where we stopped had many statues, and we got a kick out of this gull perched on the head of the statue of someone famous!
This military band was assembling in the Senate Square which had 3 buildings that were great examples of European architecture--these were designed by a German architect and completed in 1822. The band marched as part of an economic meeting that was taking place that day. They were followed by a small group of soldiers which you can barely see in the background.

This is the outside of their "Rock Church" and was one of the places we enjoyed visiting. Not sure that actual church services are held here any more, most of the churches seemed to be more used as museums.

The church was Lutheran and was all natural granite, very plain but also quite a spiritual feel.

Through out all our tours in each country we saw a lot of construction and sometimes they decorated the outside of the construction area with murals or in this case with flowers in a heart shape and spelling out Helsinki. They looked like actual dried flowers and the sign was huge! The material we had on the city said that it had grown dramatically since WWII and has about 1/10th of the Finnish population. It is called "a city of the sea" & is built on a series of small islands & peninsulas.
