Day 3 St Petersburg, Russia

Our last day in Russia! Our tour today is Peter the Great's Grand Palace, Peterhof, which leaves at 7:45 as it is an about 45 min drive into the country. Much of the drive was through rural countryside but also with industrial areas. It seemed like there was a great deal of disrepair. We had quite a long walk from the bus park to the palace and there were many little shops for souvenirs, not open when we arrived. Peterhof was the favorite residence of Peter I for whom it is named. The imperial residences are around the edges of the city and were built at the same time as the city. This photo shows Peterhof above the Grand Cascade. We bought a book on St Petersburg and it has a very large section on this palace. Which is really nice because even though we toured the interior we were not allowed to take photos inside. Each room had a very stern Russian lady in attendance who monitored the tourists behavior and directed the tour guides in & out of the room quite sternly!
The Russian's believe Red is for love & beauty, so I am wearing red to celebrate our last day in Russia. (We also found wearing bright colors when touring helped us keep track of each other!) Here we are in our earphones at the beginning of the tour, assembling in front of the palace just above the Grand Cascade.

Peterhof opened in Aug 1723 and this is a view from the palace of the Grand Cascade which is a symmetrical arrangement of fountains & sculpture on terraces going from the palace to the sea at the end of this canal-type area.

We toured the gardens as well as the palace and this is one of the fountains with sculpture surrounding it.

There were many fountains and beautiful gardens. We walked & walked quite quickly and would have liked to have had a few stops to take more photos as we had to just "snap & run" to keep up with our guide! The fountains in the Grand Cascade were timed for a show at 11 a.m. and we were hurrying along to be there on time.
