Wednesday in Riga, Latvia

This is a photo of the Dome Square which is the center of the Old Town. The Dome Cathedral was built in 1210 & is the largest place of worship in the Baltic. The walls are 6 1/2 ft thick! In the foreground is a "tree" which our guide stated was where the first Christmas tree stood here in 1510.
One of the squares with outside places to sit and to eat. If you click & enlarge the photo you can see more of the buildings and church.

It got very warm about 3 p.m. and people began asking what else we were going to see. And when Bruno, the guide, said more buildings, some asked for a break. There was a nice little cafe in this square with a man playing a piano and the soccer (World Cup) game playing on the big screen in about the center of the photo. If you click to enlarge this, you can see behind the 2 people in the center, that the green square is actually showing grass with the soccer players! The lady walking toward the tables is Mary Helen from Atlanta who we met when we spent our day in the Frankfort, Germany airport as they were on the same flight we were on that was cancelled & later flew together to Stockholm. Saw a lot of each other on the cruise. We had a Coke and watched the game for the 30 minutes that Bruno said we could have for a break.

A sign for one of the churches we visited in Riga which still has Mass.

Another of the churches we visited. We learned that if there was a rooster weather vane on the church that it was protestant rather than Catholic. This one just has a cross so probably was Catholic. We were in a number of churches as we walked through Riga.
