Grand Imperial Evening of the Tsars 6/20/10

Dressed and ready to go to customs and on to our bus for the grand evening at 6:15 p.m. We were headed to "Tsarskoye Selo" or Catherine's Palace. This is an immense village with many buildings around the palace. We first toured the carriage house with many carriages used by the royalty.

We walked about a block from the carriage house to the palace. It was built in the 1750's by Peter the Great's wife, Catherine I, but was her daughter, Elizabeth, who felt the palace should be "for the common glory of Russia."
We were greeted at the enterance by this band playing for us. All of the visitors for this special, exclusive evening were from the Oceania Regatta & the palace is not usually open in evenings.

This is a detail from the carvings on the palace.

These were the soldiers guarding the 40 stairs which led to the magnificant (mostly re-created) rooms of the palace.
