Inside Catherine's Palace 6/20/10

We toured many rooms of the palace and I've chosen a few which we thought were amazing. The picture hall--the entire room is lined with framed photos. In the front you can see one of the blue & white "stoves" made in Holland which were used to heat the rooms.
There were musicians in many of the rooms who played for us as we walked through the rooms. Each of the tour guides had their bus group and would tell us about the special features of the room. You can see the "heater" tiles more closely in this photo. They were very beautiful but not sure what the heat source was. This palace was used primarily in the summer but our guide said the rooms could get very cool even then which is understandable when it was 50 this morning and rained most of the day. It was beautiful by the time we got to the palace in the evening.

This is an example of all the opulent gilding which was evident in very many of the rooms.

This is one of Catherine's dresses. She had something like 1500 dresses when she died.

An example of the paintings on the ceilings. There were many mirrors, gilding every where and the beautiful painted ceilings and we were told these were all done to create an illusion of endless space in the palace.
